The Gulf War was the largest troop build up in History. The Noise, Vibration and Other Physical Exposures to the troops was incalculable.

There are several job categories in many of the services in which extreme whole body vibration or localized vibration to the hands and feet can cause medical problems.

Most of the time, these medical problems are manifested as injury to the nervous system, skeletal system, and  vascular systems of the Human body.
You may be eligible to file for direct service connection for this condition.
If you have other concerns regarding this topic, please contact the VA.

Title :   Vibration Disease and Its Pathogenesis,

Report Date : 21 AUG 1974

Abstract : Pathogenesis of the onset and development of the vibration disease is connected with a complex interacting chain of neurohumoral and reflex-developing changes in the activity of the various regions of the nervous system (peripheral and central). In the advanced stages, vibration can lead to degenerative processes in the nervous system, vascular system, and muscles. The only favorable recommendation is early diagnosis and a rational job placement.

For four hours a day (the longest time a human can be exposed to workplace vibration according to U.S. and international standards)
See: NIOSH

Vibration injuries were initially documented some 92 years ago. Yet, in the late 1970's, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) noted there had been very little remedial activity and that vibrating hand tools were still causing pain and permanent impairment to workers using them. While the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has not adopted any HAVS standard, considering HAVS an ergonomie problem (which it has tended to shy away from), it has from time to time 'issued citations for vibrationrelated hazards under its General Duty Clause. This clause requires that employers provide their employees with a safe workplace, "free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees."

Although Vibration syndrome has been characterized by vascular and peripheral nervous symptoms. Evidence of nervous disorders, indicating involvment of central nervous system, have also been reported (Klimkova, 1996) Griffin (1980) concluded that vibrations can impair CNS funtion through damage to the automomic centers of the brain. Distubances of the central nervous system includes anxiety, depression, headache, palm sweating, irritability and emotional instability (Habu, 1984)

The Seabee's are Construction Battalions!

Would not this account for the Seabees being the most symptomatic troops?

Did not the Seabees occupation alone expose, them to more dangerous vibration from equipment and tools?

Why was there no safety awareness for Vibration Syndrome when the Security Bulliten was issued in 1974, 1983 and again 1989?

"The overall test is still the conduct of the reasonable and prudent Goverment, taking positive thought for the safety of his workers in the light of what he knows or ought to know; where there is a reconized and gereral practice which has been followed for a substantial period in similar circumstances without mishap, he is entitled to follow it, unless in the light of commonsense or newer knowledge, it is clearly bad; but where there is a developing knowledge, it is clearly bad; unless in the light of commonsense or knowledge, he must keep reasonably abreast of it and not be too slow to apply it; and where he has in fact greater than average or standard precautions. He must weigh up the risks in terms of the likelihood of injury occuring and the potential consequences if it does; and he must balance this against the probable effectiveness of the precautions that can be taken to meet it and the expense and inconveniencde they involve. If he is found to have fallen below the standard to be properly expected of a reasonable and prudent Goverment in these respects, he is negligent."

"Not only in antiquity but in our own times also laws have been passed in well-ordered cities to secure good conditions for the workers; so it is only right that the art of medicine should contribute its portion for the benefit and relief of those for whom the law has shown such foresight; indeed we ought to show peculiar zeal, though so far we have neglected to do so, in taking precautions for the safety, so that as far as possible they may work at their chosen calling without loss of health. I for one have done all that lay in my power, and have not thought it beneath me to step into workshops of the meaner sort now and again and study the obscure operations of the mechanical arts.""

Health Problems Associated with Vibration Exposure

■Continuous exposure to excessive vibration may cause irreversible damage to the body.

■Regular exposure to hand-arm vibration may cause Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome – Symptoms include tingling, numbness, and pain in the fingers and hands.

■Regular exposure to whole body vibration may cause low back pain.

If you are concerned about health problems associated with vibration exposure, contact the Environmental Health Coordinator or Patient Care Advocate at your nearest VA medical center.

Critical Past!

The Life of Reason (1905-1906)

[edit]Vol. I, Reason in Common Sense

  • Even the most inspired verse, which boasts not without a relative justification to be immortal, becomes in the course of ages a scarcely legible hieroglyphic; the language it was written in dies, a learned education and an imaginative effort are requisite to catch even a vestige of its original force. Nothing is so irrevocable as mind.
  • Happiness is the only sanction of life; where happiness fails, existence remains a mad and lamentable experiment.
  • That life is worth living is the most necessary of assumptions and, were it not assumed, the most impossible of conclusions.
  • Fanaticism consists in redoubling your efforts when you have forgotten your aim.
  • Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
    • This famous statement has produced many paraphrases and variants:
Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes.
Those who do not read history are doomed to repeat it.
Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors are destined to repeat them.

Those who do not know history's mistakes are doomed to repeat them.

Can Do!

There must be no barriers to freedom of inquiry ... There is no place for dogma in science. The scientist is free, and must be free to ask any question, to doubt any assertion, to seek for any evidence, to correct any errors.

Let every man remind their descendants that they also are soldiers who must not desert the ranks of their ancestors, or from cowardice fall behind.

The Scientist says:

PROOF, n. Evidence having a shade more of plausibility than of
unlikelihood. The testimony of two credible witnesses as opposed to
that of only one.

The Doctor says:

PAIN, n. An uncomfortable frame of mind that may have a physical
basis in something that is being done to the body, or may be purely
mental, caused by the good fortune of another

The Therapist says:

REFLECTION, n. An action of the mind whereby we obtain a clearer view
of our relation to the things of yesterday and are able to avoid the
perils that we shall not again encounter.

The Teacher says:
The Government received an F on the preschool ditto of connecting the dots. The picture was supposed to be of a monkey. Theres came out a Jackass. They will need to repeat preschool.

Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

Seabee Poem 1991..

The War Goes On

"It seems like its been forever, we say that we have been away. As the war goes on, both day and night, to free Kuwait someday.

We are here in the Arabian desert, the Iraqi's dug in deep and tight, As we continue to bomb them in this war, a war which goes on both day and night.

We are proud to be the American force. We will never surrender without a fight. With are allies standing beside us strong, as the war goes on both day and night.

The missiles fill the night sky, the soldiers on both sides filled with fright. Telling themselves that someday it will all end. As the war goes on both day and night.

We hop that Iraq will surrender. AS the multi-force shows its might. To save thousands of lives, we hope and pray. As the war goes on both day and night.

Someday this war will be behind us. But we must never lose sight. of the many people who lost their lives, as the war goes on day and night"

Live and let live.

The Song of the Seabees
(1943)
Words by Sam M. Lewis
Music by Peter de Rose

We're the Seabees of the Navy
We can build and we can fight
We'll pave the way to victory
And guard it day and night
And we promise that we remember
The “Seventh of December”

We're the Seabees of the Navy
Bees of the Seven Seas

The Navy wanted men
That's where we came in
Mister Brown and Mister Jones
the Owens, Cohens, and Flynn
The Navy wanted more
Of uncle Sammy's kin
So we all joined up
And brother we're in to win

Search men's governing principles, and consider the wise, what they shun and what they cleave to.

If a man would pursue Philosophy, his first task is to throw away conceit. For it is impossible for a man to begin to learn what he has a conceit that he already knows.

The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it.

Until philosophers are kings, or the kings and princes of this world have the spirit and power of philosophy, and political greatness and wisdom meet in one, and those commoner natures who pursue either to the exclusion of the other are compelled to stand aside, cities will never have rest from their evils...

Democracy, which is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder, and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequaled alike.
Truth is always strange — stranger than fiction. ~Lord Byron
Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.
Do not try to bend the spoon; that's impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth: There is no spoon. ~ Young boy in The Matrix
Human knowledge and human power meet in one; for where the cause is not known the effect cannot be produced. Nature to be commanded must be obeyed...
Man, being the servant and interpreter of Nature, can do and understand so much and so much only as he has observed in fact or in thought of the course of nature. Beyond this he neither knows anything nor can do anything.
Far more marvelous is the truth than any artists of the past imagined it. Why do the poets of the present not speak of it?

I would see people building a bridge, or they'd be making a new road, and I thought, they're crazy, they just don't understand, they don't understand.
We have found it of paramount importance that in order to progress, we must recognize our ignorance and leave room for doubt.
It is perfectly obvious that the whole world is going to hell. The only possible chance that it might not is that we do not attempt to prevent it from doing so.

The drug does not produce the transcendent experience. It merely acts as a chemical key — it opens the mind, frees the nervous system of its ordinary patterns and structures.
